How to use AI to write a letter to your landlord

A clear, polite, dated letter gets taken more seriously than an angry text. Here is how to get AI to write a good first draft in a few minutes.

1

Before you start

Have these to hand: what the problem is, when it started, what you have already told the landlord and when, and what you want to happen. Photos are useful to send with the letter, but you only need to describe them to the AI.

2

Step by step

1. Open OPUP and type something like: “Write a letter to my landlord about damp in the bedroom. It started in October and I told them by text on the 3rd.”

2. Answer the question it asks. It may want to know the tone you want or what you want the landlord to do.

3. Read the draft. Check every date and fact is right. AI can only use what you told it.

4. Ask for changes in plain words: “shorter”, “firmer”, “add that I have photos”.

5. Copy it into an email or print it. Keep a copy with the date you sent it.

3

Tips that help

Stick to facts and dates. Say what you want done and by when. Keep it polite even if you are fed up, because the letter may be read by someone else later.

4

What AI cannot do here

It is not a solicitor and it does not know your tenancy agreement. For your rights on repairs, deposits or eviction, check Shelter, Citizens Advice or Gov.uk. If the problem is serious or the landlord does not respond, get proper advice.
